Simple Ways to Outsmart Online Scams
November 2026
Online scams are more convincing than ever. A fake delivery notice, an urgent message from your “bank,” or a too-good-to-be-true holiday deal can land in your inbox or text messages looking completely legitimate. Scammers count on people clicking quickly without a second thought. The good news? A few smart habits can stop most scams in their tracks.
Check the Source
Before you open a link or attachment, take a close look at who sent it. Scammers often use email addresses and phone numbers that look almost right, like a company name with an extra letter or an unusual domain. If the sender seems unfamiliar or slightly off, treat the message with caution.
Hover Before You Click
On a computer, hover your mouse over a link to preview where it really leads. On a phone or tablet, press and hold the link instead. If the web address doesn’t match the company it claims to be from, or looks like a jumble of random letters and numbers, don’t click it.
Pause and Verify
Scammers love urgency. Messages that say your account will be closed, a payment failed, or you need to act “right now” are designed to make you panic. Take a breath and verify the message on your own. Contact the company using a phone number or website you already know is real, not the one listed in the suspicious message.
Don’t Download from Unknown Sources
Unexpected attachments and downloads can hide viruses or malware that put your personal information at risk. Only download files and apps from sources you trust, and be wary of attachments you weren’t expecting, even if they appear to come from someone you know.
Protecting yourself online doesn’t take technical know-how, just a moment of caution. When something feels off, trust your instincts. And if you ever receive a suspicious message claiming to be from BEK, call us directly at 888-475-2361. We’re always happy to help you confirm what’s real.
